This month, in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the National Federation of Independent Business is sponsoring the “PowHER to Achieve program” which celebrates successful women entrepreneurs while also supporting breast cancer awareness.
The PowHER to Achieve program will run throughout the month of October. Each week, the NFIB will give away prizes of cash and technology as well as making a donation towards breast cancer awareness for every new woman business owner who joins.
“Thousands of women entrepreneurs are members of NFIB,” said Mark Garzone, NFIB Senior VP of Marketing. “By sponsoring the ‘PowHER to Achieve’ celebration, we want to recognize their success, encourage other business owners to join NFIB and give them a chance to win great prizes that can be put to work in their businesses.”
According to national statistics, there are 7.8 million women-owned businesses in the US, generating $1.2 trillion in receipts. Nearly 90 percent of these are small businesses.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, and the second leading cause of death among women, after heart disease. It is estimated that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and that more than 40,000 US women die of breast cancer every year.
During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, businesses and individuals campaign to encourage women to take steps to establish an early detection plan to fight the disease in its early stages. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, death rates from breast cancer have declined in recent years, in part due to better screening and detection, and increased awareness.
