In light of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, experts are sharing that vulnerable retail, foodservice and entertainment sectors are already experiencing billions of lost revenues. It’s no doubt in-person brick and mortar small businesses are getting hit hardest by social distancing, consumer fear, and economic hesitancy.

Unfortunately, 82% of small business owners recently surveyed by Thryv, Inc. and the SBDC say they are “extremely concerned” about the current business environment in light of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Thryv user Essentially Well Oiled was preparing for the grim possibility of having to close their doors — and their books — for good. Without revenue from walk-in store traffic, it was hard to imagine how they’d stay afloat.

But, they got creative. Whereas consumers could no longer visit them to buy the products they still love, Essentially Well Oiled could still use home delivery to sell their products.

Here’s their email announcement to customers.

Tips for Starting a New Home Delivery Service

Essentially Well Oiled says the new home delivery program has kept them in business. Customers are loving it. Here’s how you can achieve similar success:

  • Start any communications with the offer upfront: “Now Offering Home Delivery”
  • Be clear about how you’ll take delivery orders, such as via phone, text, or web form.
  • Consider setting up online appointment booking so customers can choose their delivery time.
  • Set clear expectations for minimum order quantity or dollar amount.
  • Estimate a delivery time frame, giving your team extra time should they encounter unexpected issues.
  • Communicate how you’ll implement health and safety guidelines like social distancing as part of your delivery service. For example, offer to leave packages on doorsteps instead of handing them off in person.
  • Offer a discount if you’re really hurting for orders.
  • Spread the word! Send an email, post on your social channels, and add a pop-up or banner to your website.
